Dr. Ohhira Probiotics is a probiotic supplement lineup which has prebiotics, postbiotics, and of course probiotics blended into one.

They're used for digestive support, immune function, nutrient absorption and all with a formula which is supposed to keep fresh without any refrigeration.

Read about the Top 10 best probiotic supplements at this link.

Pros:

  • Some of the strains of bacteria can be potentially useful. Widely available in many online stores as well as on the official website.

Cons:

  • Many of the ingredients are questionable, and it's unclear what kind of support they truly offer. Science is lacking for certain additives.

The simplest probiotic offered has a total of 12 different strains and to supplement they advise using a capsule twice a day on an empty stomach about an hour to an hour and a half before a meal. Each 60 capsule box should then last a total of 30 days.

A 60 day capsule box retails for $91.50 on most websites. This averages to $2.66 a day to supplement properly.

Japanese Mugwort: Medicinal plant that is used for its antioxidant effects and to help treat general unease. In some the pollen may actually cause hay fever.

Enterococcus Faecalis TH10: A unique and less studied form of bacteria which is the main strain used in this blend. The studies on this are lacking and there's worry about it being potentially resistant to antibiotics with a possibility for causing UTI's. A review by the Universidade Federal de Vicosa warned that this is:

"still debated... some... resistant to antibiotics"

Streptococcus Thermophilus: Often found in fermented milk, this is the most common bacteria found in things like yogurt. This helps turn lactose into lactic acid. A small study showed that it worked slightly better at treating diarrhea than a placebo.

Wakame: Seaweed that is sometimes paired with salads and soup. This is considered an invasive species and it has a rich source of vitamins and minerals. This is often used for fat burning and for its rich source of fatty acids.

Yuzu Fruit: A citrus fruit used in China, Japan, and Korea. This is often used for its antioxidants which can help improve the immune system.

Melanoidin: A blend of amino acids and sugar which is processed at a high heat. This is often added to things like beer for an added color and smell.

Probiotic Strains

You get a total of 12 different strains in their original formula, most of which are fairly common to basic kinds of yogurt. This doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing; just that you get a lot of what's to be expected in most brands.

The only unique strain added to this is the TH10 Enterococcus faecalis, though this is controversial since studies are currently lacking. As we mentioned previous, there is also debate on whether or not this is safe to use. Some studies show that it can actually lead to antibiotic resistance and UTI's.

We also would have preferred had the company given this blend a more detailed analysis, especially for customers who aren't sure about what to look for in a probiotic.

This also relies heavily on post and prebiotic ingredients which can be useful, but the types added here are questionable since it's hard to find clinical studies for each ingredient.

Company Reputation

They're a Florida based company that uses the same name of their brand as their company name. Sales are available on the official website and they offer a 30 day return as long as nothing is opened or tampered with. It must come in the original box, and this is only offered for US based consumers.

The official website does state that there are some potential side effects such as constipation and gas, but that this is generally well tolerated. They do list a few cases in which there were complications, but they make it clear that this is rare.

It does appear that a FDA warning letter was sent to a company advertising for the company, but it seems likely that Dr. Ohhira as a whole did not make the questionable unproven marketing claims.

Science

The official website does have a fairly descriptive explanation about the history, use, and possible health benefits offered by bacteria. They mention that there's been early research performed showing a potential for improved health.

Not all the ingredients are qualified here, but they do mention some key bacteria strains, they help explain how some of these bacteria have unique benefits which can affect all aspects of health. This includes providing antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, antidiarrheal, antiallergenic, antimicrobial, and overall support.

It's especially mentioned how it can support the gut barrier, and some science is mentioned such as rat trials which tested its effects on reducing tumors. They don't actually link to any studies, but in doing our research it's clear they are talking about actual studies.

Conclusion:

Dr. Ohhira Probiotics has many different potentially useful ingredients, but the fact they add certain questionable additives makes it hard to trust.

We just don't know if this is going to be safe to use long-term, and there are also some ingredients in this which don't have a clear effective use as studies are lacking. We'd need to see a lot more data to know if this product lineup is trustworthy.
